Ferrania Orto is P30’s quirky cousin and features the same high silver content, inherently strong contrast and practically invisible grain as P30 – but this time, distinctly ortochromatico.

In the earliest days of silent cinema, film stock was blue-sensitive or orthochromatic. Hollywood relied on cosmetics as a “corrective” for on-screen actors. One hundred years later, the very “flaws” that plagued our predecessors are now the creative features that distinguish orthochromatic films today.

Most modern black and white films are panchromatic. Orthochromatic films are primarily sensitive to blue and to a lesser extent, green light.

This means that red and orange colours will be reproduced in darker tones with stronger contrast compared to a regular panchromatic film, giving a distinct orthochromatic look!

Ferrania Orto is newly manufactured film – not rebranded stock.
It is proudly made in the reimagined factory on the grounds of the original Ferrania company, in Cairo Montenotte, Italy.

– 36 exposures per roll
– 50ISO black and white film
– Made in Italy
– Very smooth, barely visible grain
– High contrast
– Freshly made, direct from the Ferrania factory.

The Film Ferrania story is truly remarkable.
For much of the 20th Century, Ferrania was one of the world's largest film manufacturers.
With their huge factory in Northern Italy, they produced millions of rolls per year for decades, both under the Ferrania brand and various others, like Solaris and TudorColor.
Like many other film companies, the early 2000's were a time of upheaval with the switch to digital, and by 2008 the company was bust and its huge factory sat empty.
In 2012, Nicola Baldini and Marco Pagni founded the modern Film Ferrania company, and in 2014 ran a successful kickstarter campaign, raising enough money to save one of the original small research and production factories on the Ferrania campus.
After many years troubleshooting machinery and production issues and modernising their new (old) factory building, Ferrania is now running continuous production of beautiful black and white film in their very own factory!
There are only a handful of companies in the world who can still manufacture film, and Ferrania have now re-joined that exclusive club.
All Ferrania film is made in their factory in Italy. It is not re-packaged or re-branded film from another manufacturer.
Support this pioneering company and the important work they are doing, try out some of their beautiful film today!

James L. ★★★★★

The grain is practically invisible on this stuff, even when I push it a stop, and the contrast is just gorgeous for gritty street shots. That high silver content really gives it a punchy, old-school look I haven't gotten from anything else in a while.

Henry ★★★★★

I've shot a few rolls now and the practically invisible grain surprised me the most, even in bright daylight shots where I expected some texture to show up. It loves harsh light, giving everything that moody, vintage look without losing sharpness.

Isabella X. ★★★★★

I finally tried a roll of this film and the contrast is just stunning — it makes black and white pop like nothing else I've shot. The grain is practically invisible even in medium-sized prints, which is exactly what I was hoping for. Definitely stocking up for my next portrait session.
